Augustine's take on "Practicing what you preach"
Now these men do good to many by preaching what they themselves do not perform; but they would do good to very many more if they lived as they preach. For there are numbers who seek an excuse for their own evil lives in comparing the teaching with the conduct of their instructors, and who say in their hearts, or even go a little further, and say with their lips: Why do you not do yourself what...

This thought just occurred to me as I was shaving tonight…We (Christians) are quick to address and fight against those sins that damage our reputation and image. Sins that affect how people perceive us, what we are known for, and how people talk about us. But do we show the same attention to those sins that actually promote us? I’d argue NO. We tend to reserve those sins to be...

Oh, Mercy
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. For judgement is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgement.

Jesus was not postmodern
If he was… he would not have rebuked the Pharisees for living the way they did, because who really can tell anyone how to live in a postmodern world?
If he was… he would not have fashioned a whip and driven out the moneychangers and merchants in the Temple, because who could really say they were doing something wrong in a postmodern world?
If he was… he would never have made an...

good morning grace
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

think Puritan prayers are boring? think again
i have never read more lively, vivid, colorful language that expresses a deeply rooted love and knowledge of God.
biblical. articulate. expressive. creative. honest. inspiring.
here is an excerpt from a prayer titled “the love of Jesus”:
my heart melts at the love of Jesus, my brother, bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh, married to me, dead for me, risen for me;
he is mine and i...

apparently inherent
i oftentimes find myself caught between two worlds. an ambassador to one from the other. a mediator between two contending ideologies.
i feel like a translator of two dialects of the same language…two dialects that oftentimes intend the same thing, while sounding entirely foreign to the other.
i have spoken both dialects in my own life. these dialects are not disjoint, as they may appear....

I passed by a horse and he watched until he was bored
then he turned his attention to his stomach and what more he could absorb
and Lord aren’t I the same?
widening my view from the gate to the plain
My master called me to freedom and I settled for grain
Isn’t the world this way?

today, around noon, i went by my grandparents’ home to water their plants in their yard. about halfway through, i came across a rose bush in their back yard. it was a large bush, so i spent a little more time giving the bush the water it needed.
now, i don’t claim to have thought of something original, or even too profound, but as i stood there staring at the bush i noticed something...
this week is not going to be fun...
i am dreading this week, because I’m not accustomed to getting up at 6:45 each morning and working 9 hours and then helping with VBS at church for a couple of hours afterwards…. for 5 days in a row. This is going to be very challenging, but I think it’ll be worth it in the end. By the way, Clemson once again demonstrated that they just aren’t a tournamet team by losing the...
Is this the adult Xanga???
Well, I feel like blogs are pretty sweet things…. things may not be the word I’m looking for, perhaps “obsessions” is the term. I refused to get obsessed with twitter because there hardly was any content to it. I also feel like facebook is nowhere to have deep discussions, so tumblr looks like a legit area for thought and responses. I am also excited to get informed with my...
